12. Mission Control

‘It’s amazing,’ sang Ollie. ‘Pleasure Island Resort is even better than the adverts on telly!’

‘And what great weather,’ said Ben, tying his jumper around his waist. ‘Look, there’s a firework display tonight,’ he said, pointing at a billboard.

‘Check out the beach,’ said Sophie, running towards the shoreline.

The children took off their shoes and ran across the warm golden sand, whooping with delight. Ben threw a Frisbee for the puppies, Star leaping to catch it in her mouth. Lara was already up to her chest in the cool ocean, watching as Spud snapped and yapped at the waves. The children rolled up their trousers and paddled up to their knees. A big wave caught Ollie and he squealed as his jeans went dark blue.

Lara looked around at the crowded beach. She knew from what Mr and Mrs Cook had said that Pleasure Island Resort was booked solid for the whole summer. ‘We’re lucky to be here,’ she woofed to the puppies. Lara couldn’t help feeling sorry for all the victims of the Toxic Terror. She had her paws crossed that the evil villain wouldn’t strike at Pleasure Island.

The children wandered back to the apartment, chatting excitedly as they went. Ben rang the bell and Mum opened the door to everyone bursting in, eager to tell their parents about the beach, sea, funfair and fireworks. Dad was watching the news, tutting about a report from Sandy Shore and a breaking news story about the theft of a lorry from a nuclear power plant.

Just then Spud spied a lorry driving through the gates. ‘Jimmy’s Donuts,’ he woofed. He looked at the sun and estimated the time. Way past afternoon-tea time, he thought. And we’re probably not eating until late. And Dad said we couldn’t afford big meals. So maybe I could sneak a snack now to quieten my tummy. He was slobbering. Spud licked his lips and doggy drool sprayed everywhere. And donuts are in my top five, he thought. Along with custard creams … Jammie Dodgers … Mum’s cottage pie … stew and dumplings … candy floss … Well, maybe there’s more than five! His mind was made up. ‘See you guys in a bit,’ he woofed. ‘I’m off to explore a bit more.’

‘Be careful,’ woofed Lara. ‘Don’t wander too far from the apartment.’

Spud nodded and trotted away, his tail sticking out like an aerial, his nose to the floor. His one-track mind was tuned in to donuts!
